The short answer is: it depends on who your audience is, and less than it used to.

The longer answer is worth understanding properly, because there is a fair amount of outdated advice circulating on this topic and a few things that genuinely do matter. This post covers what server location affects, what it does not, and what you should actually be thinking about if you are choosing between a UK and US host.


How server location affects page speed

The most direct effect of server location is latency: the time it takes for data to travel between the server and the visitor’s device. A server in London responding to a request from Manchester will be faster than a server in New York responding to the same request, simply because the data has less distance to travel.

In practice, the difference for a typical WordPress site on modern infrastructure is measured in tens of milliseconds rather than seconds. A visitor in the UK accessing a well-configured US-hosted site will not notice the difference on most connections. The latency gap becomes more significant for sites with many server round-trips per page load, which is a reason to keep those down regardless of where your server is.

Where server location has a more meaningful effect on speed is for Time to First Byte (TTFB): the time between a browser requesting a page and receiving the first byte of the response. Google uses TTFB as one component of its Core Web Vitals assessment. A host geographically closer to your visitors will generally produce a lower TTFB, and a lower TTFB contributes to a better Core Web Vitals score.

For a site with a primarily UK audience, a UK-based server will typically produce a slightly lower TTFB than a comparable US-based server. How much this matters relative to other factors, such as caching, image optimisation, and PHP performance, is discussed below.


What Google actually uses for geotargeting

Until relatively recently, server IP address was one of the signals Google used to determine the geographic relevance of a website. A site hosted in the UK, on a UK IP address, was more likely to be treated as relevant to UK searches.

This is now largely historical. Google’s primary geotargeting signals are:

Country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs). A .co.uk domain is a strong signal that a site is intended for a UK audience. This is the clearest and most reliable geotargeting signal you can give Google.

Google Search Console geotargeting settings. For generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org), you can set a target country in Google Search Console. This is the correct tool to use if you have a .com domain and want Google to understand it is targeting UK visitors.

Content and hreflang. The language and content of a site, and for multilingual sites the hreflang attribute, also inform Google’s understanding of geographic relevance.

Server location remains a very minor signal in Google’s geotargeting assessment. If you have a .co.uk domain and your content is clearly aimed at a UK audience, hosting on a US server is unlikely to affect your UK search visibility in any meaningful way.


CDNs and where they change the picture

A content delivery network (CDN) distributes copies of your site’s static assets, images, CSS, JavaScript, to servers around the world. When a visitor loads your site, those assets are served from whichever CDN node is geographically closest to them rather than from your origin server.

For a site using a CDN, the geographic location of the origin server matters less, because most of what the visitor’s browser downloads is coming from a local CDN node rather than the origin. The origin server is still involved in generating page HTML for uncached requests, but a well-configured CDN with page caching reduces even that.

Cloudflare’s free plan is the most widely used CDN for WordPress sites and is available to anyone regardless of their host. If your site is behind Cloudflare, the speed difference between a UK and US origin server is smaller than it would otherwise be, because static assets are served from Cloudflare’s nearest point of presence regardless of where your server is.

This does not mean server location is entirely irrelevant if you use a CDN, but it reduces its practical significance considerably.


Data residency and GDPR

Speed and SEO aside, there is a separate argument for UK or EU hosting that has nothing to do with Google: data residency.

If your site collects personal data from UK visitors, whether through contact forms, account registrations, newsletter signups, or ecommerce, GDPR and the UK’s post-Brexit equivalent apply. One of the principles these regulations establish is that personal data should not be transferred to countries without adequate data protection standards without appropriate safeguards in place.

The US was in a complicated position on this for several years following the Schrems II ruling, though the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, adopted in 2023, has restored a legal mechanism for EU-US data transfers for participating companies. For most practical purposes, using a US host that participates in this framework is legally defensible.

That said, hosting in the UK means the question does not arise. Your data stays in the UK, subject to UK law, with no cross-border transfer involved. For site owners who want simplicity or who are handling particularly sensitive data, UK hosting removes a layer of compliance complexity.


What actually moves the needle for SEO

If you are choosing a host and thinking about SEO impact, server location is a long way down the list of things that matter. In order of practical significance:

Page speed, and specifically Core Web Vitals. Google has been explicit that page experience signals affect ranking. Core Web Vitals (Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and Interaction to Next Paint) are measurable and actionable. A well-optimised site on a US server will outperform a poorly optimised site on a UK server in UK search results.

Uptime and reliability. A site that is intermittently unavailable is indexed less reliably and loses traffic. Consistent uptime is a hosting factor that genuinely affects SEO, and it is something to check when evaluating any provider, not just on the UK vs US question.

HTTPS. This has been a minor Google ranking signal since 2014. Every site should be on HTTPS. Any reputable host will provision SSL automatically.

Time to First Byte. As discussed, TTFB affects Core Web Vitals. A UK host will generally produce a lower TTFB for UK visitors than a US host on equivalent infrastructure. This is a real but modest advantage.

Server-side performance. PHP version, server-side caching, and storage type (NVMe vs older SSDs) affect how quickly your server generates page responses. These factors vary more between hosting providers than between UK and US locations, and they have a larger effect on TTFB than geography alone.


The practical conclusion

For a site targeting a UK audience:

A .co.uk domain is worth more to your UK search visibility than your server’s geographic location. If you have a .com, set your target country in Google Search Console.

UK hosting gives you a modest TTFB advantage for UK visitors, which is a real benefit but not large enough to outweigh significant differences in server quality, reliability, or price between providers.

UK hosting removes data residency complexity for GDPR purposes, which is a clean argument in its favour that has nothing to do with search rankings.
